At its core Trumpism is all about incentivized transactionalism, ie, making the deal. Then pray tell what incentive does India — or any other country for that matter — have to come to a trade agreement with the US if the US reserves the right to levy punitive tariffs on products made in India? And this assumes that one of America’s peripatetic federal district judges would not immediate strike down company-specific tariffs.
This stuff is a reality-free attempt at industrial policy. Believe it or not there already exists a Made In USA cell phone, one you’ve likely never heard of and Trump 2.0 surely has not. Purism produces the Liberty Phone in its Carlsbad, California facility. It runs Linux, costs $2000, does not support 5G, and is positively security obsessed. As 4G is phased out the phone may be de facto phased out. Still ‘Merica pure Purism depends on chip sets from Taiwan or South Korea. And demand? Purism maybe ships a couple thousand units at the high end, maybe as few as 500, no one knows. Bottomline, there is almost no demand for a Made In USA phone as a distinguishing factor and US manufacturing capacity is tiny. Apple sold 207 million iPhones last year. There is simply no way to build them in the USA.
