Good Friday is an awful odd time to lob this hand grenade into the national psyche, an unflinching declaration from Trump 2.0 that we were systematically lied to about the origin of COVID. By none other than Trump 1.0 officials. (Oh and Andrew Cuomo.) Why this and why now? Some of us have begged Donald Trump to reframe the Operation Warp Speed days as a mistake, and lessons were learned etc. But we’ve somehow blown completely past that to this:
Prolonged lockdowns caused immeasurable harm to not only the American economy, but also to the mental and physical health of Americans, with a particularly negative effect on younger citizens. Rather than prioritizing the protection of the most vulnerable populations, federal and state government policies forced millions of Americans to forgo crucial elements of a healthy and financially sound life.
Erm, let Grok spell it out:
On March 13, 2020, Trump declared a national emergency, unlocking federal resources and signaling the severity of the crisis. This action implicitly backed state governors’ decisions to impose stay-at-home orders, as seen in states like California (March 19) and New York (March 20). … On March 16, 2020, the White House, under Trump’s leadership, issued the “15 Days to Slow the Spread” guidelines, which recommended social distancing, limiting gatherings to 10 people, closing schools, and encouraging remote work. These measures, endorsed by Trump and the Coronavirus Task Force (led by Dr. Anthony Fauci and Dr. Deborah Birx), were tantamount to federal encouragement of state-level lockdowns. … Trump initially aligned with health experts, stating on March 16, 2020, “We have an invisible enemy... This is a bad one... We’re asking people to stay at home” (CNN transcript). He extended the guidelines to April 30, 2020, renaming them “30 Days to Slow the Spread,” showing continued support for restrictive measures through April.
Trump continued to vacillate well past April 2020, however. It is why the Republican National Convention got canceled and why even a backup Trump acceptance speech in Jacksonville, Florida got canceled in late July due to a supposed “surge” of positive COVID tests.
Why? Moreover wholly federal decisions made in the hysteria of spring 2020 were not reversed until the “solution” of experimental COVID jabs were on the horizon toward the end of 2020. National parks were closed down with some like the Washington Monument staying closed until October and then only open with a pointless, harmful mask mandate. The VA, HHS, FEMA, the IRS, the Social Security Administration etc. all “went remote” through the duration of Trump 1.0 canceling appointments, services along the way. Overall Trump acted like he was captive to whatever interpretation of sound COVID policy his bureaucrats dreamt up rather than the chief executive officer of the federal government. And we should probably add that it was not just Democratic governors who were pro-lock down. Maryland’s Hogan and Ohio’s DeWine were both terrible COVID fascists and the governor of ruby Red South Carolina closed dining rooms and public boat ramps by decree at the height of the hysteria. Even Georgia’s Kemp (who famously in late May 2020 made a pitch to host the RNC convention that was being run out of NC due to COVID fascism, a pitch which Trump never responded to BTW) allowed the city of Savannah to impose an outdoor mask mandate just like Los Angeles County and let Macon’s public schools stay closed for almost two years, an educational abomination. In sum, there is still much to be answered for and a snarky new web site does not begin to cut it.
Yet more on lockdowns, which have no real legal backing in the US just lots and lots of “threats.”
Turns out the Junta intended to label anyone who disagreed with it a “domestic terrorist.” Big surprise there.
